Project title
Decarbonizing fuel and chemical synthesis through sustainable and scalable carbon dioxide hydrogenation to C1 chemicals

Project description
A job opportunity to develop an exciting project for the valorization of CO2 into added value C1 products at the Institute of Advanced Materials (INAM) (www.inam.uji.es), part of the Universitat Jaume I (www.uji.es) under the supervision of Dr. Victor Sans Sangorrin (https://sansresearchgroup.wixsite.com/home) and Prof. Eduardo García-Verdugo (www.quimicasostenible.uji.es).

The project will develop advanced materials based on ionic liquid technologies and polymeric derived materials with applications in catalysis for the capture, activation and transformation of carbon dioxide to C1 products, including formic acid and methanol. The materials will be 3D printed into structured reactors and applied in continuous-flow.

The project is mainly addressed to chemists or chemical engineers, and therefore candidates from both backgrounds with relevant experience are eligible. Other relevant backgrounds can be considered.

The main tasks to be developed during the project are:
• Design, synthesis and characterization of molecular and nanostructured catalysts for the transformation of carbon dioxide under mild conditions.
• Chemical synthesis of compounds, including ionic liquids and derived monomers. Characterisation of the compounds and materials synthesised using analytical techniques.
• Design of continuous flow reactors for catalytic systems and for the synthesis of advanced materials.
• 3D printing of devices designed with commercial formulations and with in-house developed formulations. Optimization of the formulation and process parameters in order to optimise the resolution of the printed geometries.
• Construction, assembly and operation of continuous flow rigs, integrating multiple reactions, separations, etc.
• Structural characterization of the materials produced using common analytical techniques (NMR, MS, XRD, TEM, SEM, etc.).
• Collaborate in common laboratory tasks.
• Write reports, prepare publications and disseminate the results in specialized forums, including workshops, conferences; all in English language

Skills/Qualifications:
PhD degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related discipline.

Technical Requirements:
Specific requirements. Experience in some of these aspects will be preferentially valued:
• Synthesis of molecular and nanostructured catalysts
• Catalyst immobilisation
• Carbon dioxide and hydrogenation chemistry
• Ionic liquids and polymeric derivatives.
• Advanced knowledge of English language, adequate for the development of the tasks involved in the project.
Optional requirements.
• Experience in flow chemistry
• Knowledge of theoretical molecular modelling
• Understanding of process automation

Additional Information
• Expected starting date will be 01-02-2023, or as soon as possible afterwards.
• The project will run until 30-11-2024
• Applications including a CV, motivation letter and transcript of academic records should be sent to http://www.inam.uji.es/work-with-us. Please reference: TED
• Please address questions to: sans@uji.es
• The project will be developed at the Institute of Advanced Materials (INAM) (www.inam.uji.es), part of the Universitat Jaume I (www.uji.es). The UJI is located in Castelló, a city in the Mediterranean coast in Spain that combines high quality of life and affordability (www.numbeo.com).
