Project title
Novel catalytic systems for efficient CO2 valorisation to cyclic carbonates

Project description
A 4 years job offer to undertake a PhD in sustainable methods for the valorisation of carbon dioxide into added value products at the Institute of Advanced Materials (INAM) (www.inam.uji.es), part of the Universitat Jaume I (www.uji.es) under the supervision of Dr. Victor Sans Sangorrin (https://sansresearchgroup.wixsite.com/home); twitter: @vss31.
The project will develop advanced materials based on ionic liquid technologies with applications in catalysisfor the capture, activation and transformation of carbon dioxide. The materials will be 3D printed into structured reactors. Digital design (CAD, CFD) will be employed for the development of advanced geometries that will optimize mixing under continuous-flow.
The project lies in the interface between chemistry and chemical engineering, and therefore candidates from both backgrounds are eligible. Other relevant backgrounds can be considered.
The main tasks to be developed during the project are:
• Design and synthesis of catalysts for the transformation of carbon dioxide under mild conditions.
• Chemical synthesis of compounds, including ionic liquids and derived monomers. Characterisation of the compounds and materials synthesised using analytical techniques.
• Design of continuous flow reactors for catalytic systems and for the synthesis of advanced materials. It will be based on CAD designs optimized by computational fluid dynamics studies and by rational design based on engineering modeling.
• Design and modeling of synthetic and catalytic processes in continuous flow. Complex models based on multiphase systems with potential limitations due to mass and energy transfer and kinetics.
• 3D printing of devices designed with commercial formulations and with our own formulations. Optimization of the formulation and process parameters in order to optimise the resolution of the printed geometries.
• Construction, assembly and operation of continuous flow rigs, integrating multiple reactions, separations, etc.
• Structural characterization of the materials produced using common analytical techniques (NMR, MS, XRD, TEM, SEM, etc.).
• Collaborate in common laboratory tasks.
• Write reports, prepare publications and disseminate the results in specialized forums, including workshops, conferences; all in English language

Skills/Qualifications:
Bachelor + Master degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Engineer or related
discipline.

Specific Requirements:
These scholarships are open to candidates that meet the following requirements:
• To have a degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or related discipline from a non-European Union University.
• Having obtained a degree after 1st of January 2017.
• Advanced knowledge of Spanish or English language, adequate for the development of the tasks involved in the proposed training.
• Not having graduated a PhD.
To meet the academic requirements needed for the admission in a doctoral program at the selection date (see https://www.uji.es/estudis/centres/escola-doctorat/ for details). The selected candidate has to be registered in a doctoral program of Universitat Jaume I at the time of recruitment.

Additional Information
• Expected starting date will be 16-9-2022. An extension is possible under exceptional circumstances derived from the visa application procedure.
• The grant includes an additional allocation of 1.600 euros in the first year to cover relocation expenses if the mobility requirements are met.
• Applications including a CV, motivation letter and transcript of academic records should be sent to http://www.inam.uji.es/work-with-us. Please reference: CIGRIS/2021/075
